Day 1: Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica

Arrive in San Jose, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the lush Bajos del Toro area. You will drive about 90 minutes outside the city of San Jose into the vibrant rainforest and mountains of Bajos del Toro. Nestled amidst the hills you will find El Silencio Lodge, a nature lovers paradise that delivers the highest level of service, dining, and comfort.

Day 2: Bajos del Toro | El Silencio Lodge

Today we will explore the trails of the lodge. We will wind our way through the rainforest and stop to admire the pristine creeks and majestic waterfalls that the dot the property. We will be on the lookout for hummingbirds, chloriphonias, and jays.

Day 3: Osa Peninsula | Golfo Dulce

This morning after breakfast we will return to the San Jose airport for our domestic flight to Golfito. Our hosts at Playa Cativo Lodge will meet us there and ferry us by boat to the lodge. Playa Cativo lodge is surrounded by some of the most unspoiled and diverse rainforest in the country. Cativo not only boasts a private nature reserve, it borders the wonderful Piedras Blancas National Park. Today you’ll get settled at the lodge and bird the grounds.

Day 4: Osa Peninsula Piedras Blancas National Park

Piedras Blancas National Park remains one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets. This hidden gem is home to almost 400 species of birds, 750 species of trees, 140 species of mammals and 117 species of reptiles. We will spend the day exploring the park and searching out as many bird species as we can.

Day 5: Osa Peninsula | Golfo Dulce

Today will be our last day at Playa Cativo. Depending on the time of year you are visiting we may visit Piedras Blancas again, enjoy a pelagic trip and look for whales and dolphins, or kayak the Rio Esquinas Mangrove. We will let the weather and your preference determine our path today.

Day 6: Perez Zeledon | Hacienda Alta Gracia

We will board our boat transfer and travel back across Golfo Dulce to Golfito. Our transfer vehicle will be waiting there and we’ll start our journey to the hills of Perez Zeledon and Hacienda Alta Gracia. We will bird on the way, watching for kites and parrots and arrive at Alta Gracia in time for lunch. We will enjoy the wonderful facilities at Alta Gracia, and bird the grounds in the afternoon.

Day 7: Perez Zeledon | Hacienda Alta Gracia

After breakfast, we will bird the grounds and lush gardens around the hacienda then continue through the forest trails. We will be on the lookout for the golden-naped woodpecker, tanagers, wrens, and much more. This afternoon, you may want to take advantage of one of the exciting optional tours at Hacienda Alta Gracia, or we will bird around the area.

Day 8: Central Pacific | Hacienda Alta Gracia

Hacienda Alta Gracia is well known for its amazing onsite activities. Horseback riding, local farm tour, cooking classes, and thrilling ultra-light flights are just a few of the adventures offered. They also boast a huge luxurious spa and indoor swimming pool. Today is at your choice, enjoy a fun activity, stick do bird watching, or combine both for an amazing day in Costa Rica.

Day 9: San Jose | Farewell Dinner.

A tour on the Tarcoles river is the best way to search for the mangrove vireo, pygmy kingfisher, and the boat-billed herons; expect to see some huge crocodiles too. Spend the morning exploring the wetlands and then back to your hotel for an afternoon of relaxation, or birding the grounds.

Day 10: San Jose | Time to return home

The birding adventure comes to a close. Return to the San Jose Airport for your flight home.

  • This trip is suitable for guests 12 years +
  • The physical requirements are intermediate. There will be walking and hiking in temperatures between 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Guests should be able to maneuver inclines and declines, some up & down, and unpaved trails and pathways.

Deposit & Balance payments:

For reservations made outside 60 days prior to arrival, a deposit payment of 25% is required to secure your package. Your balance payment is due 60 days prior to your arrival.

For reservations made within 60 days prior to arrival, a 100% payment is due to secure your package.

Changes:

Changes may be made up to 30 days prior to arrival without fees from Costa Rica Focus; however, any fees or penalties charged by the providers in your package (hotels, transport, activities, tours, meals) will be the responsibility of the travelers. These penalties will be added to your package price.

Changes made within 30 days of your arrival will carry a change fee from Costa Rica Focus of $300 plus any fees or penalties charged by the providers in your package. (hotels, transport, activities, tours, meals).

Changes requested while in the country are at the discretion of the provider’s (hotels, transport, activities, tours, meals) in your package. Any penalties or fees associated with the changes are the responsibility of the traveler.

Cancellations:

Cancellations may be made up until 30 days prior to arrival. Cancellation penalty up to 30 days prior to arrival is 50% of your deposit amount.

Cancellations made within 30 days of arrival carry a penalty of 100%.
